Ok I know that Radio is not necessarily phone phreaking but it fits best here. Does anybody have any knowledge of the police radio system? I know that you are legally aloud to listen in and monitor, but is there anyway to get a text output of the chatter? Like on some car radios you will get the song name and station displayed on the front panel.
Also on a similar not does anybody have an idea how the in-car computers are connected to the police database. Its obviously some type of wireless network but also obviously not the conventional 802.11

You can't get a text output (unless you have some kind of crazy speech recognition device). I believe that the song name and station is encoded with the radio signal.

Yeah that stuff is broad casted usually over the UHF ban.
And the way some companies tie back to their company network is by using GSM (cellular) modems.
Example:

They would be able to connect to the internet, and VPN into their company network. That is how some do it.

I got up one morning and couldn't find my socks, so I called Information. She said, "Hello, Information." I said, "I can't find my socks." She said, "They're behind the couch." And they were!

If your wanting to listen on the police ban, and this i highly don't recommend would be to buy a HAM radio, they are around a few hundred dollars.
Also check out the HAM radio Conventions in your area, chances are you would be able to find equipment to do what your trying to do.
You are allowed to own a HAM and listen without a HAMlicense. But do not broadcast on Frequinces your not supposed to be one.

ok well if you just simply want to listen into police/fire dept./ems etc… you can just get a Radio scanner from radioshack or such. normal analog scanners go from round 100-200$.. the only problem is that now most areas are switching to a digital frequency like mine has already. I had to go and buy a digital radio scanner from radio shack which ran me about $400. not sure if you are interested in any of this info but they are relatively easy to setup and start listening in.
i hear crazy things on my constantly. Its fun if your bored
